Gapping Theory
Distance Gapping
Ideally, your golf clubs should have a 10 to 12-yard gap between them for full swings. Proper gapping ensures that you always have a comfortable "stock" shot for any distance on the course without needing to swing at 110% power.
The 7-Iron Anchor
The 7-iron is considered the "anchor" of the bag. It is the shortest club with significant shaft length and provides a reliable baseline for calculating the rest of your iron set and woods.
Environmental Optimization
Altitude Boost
A common rule of thumb is that the ball travels an additional 1% further for every 1000 feet of altitude. Playing in Denver (5280 ft) would add nearly 5.3% to your carry distance.
Temperature Effect
Colder air is denser, creating more drag. You lose roughly 2 yards for every 10-degree (°F) drop in temperature. Your 150-yard shot at 80°F may only carry 144 yards at 50°F.
