Difficulty Classification
Difficulty Thresholds
Green Circle (Beginner)
Slopes between 6% and 25% (3.4°–14°). Wide, predictable trails with low speed.
Blue Square (Intermediate)
Slopes between 25% and 40% (14°–22°). Generally groomed, may contain minor obstacles.
Black Diamond (Advanced)
Slopes between 40% and 55% (22°–29°). Steep gradients, potentially ungroomed with moguls.
Double Black Diamond (Expert)
Slopes exceeding 55% (29°+). Extremely steep, technical terrain requiring expert precision.
The Trigonometry of Snow
While percentage (Grade) is standard in North America, European resorts often favor degrees. Note that a 45-degree slope is a "100% grade." For context, some of the steepest competition runs rarely exceed 35-40 degrees, as snow begins to slough off at steeper angles.
Relationship Formula
Grade % = tan(Degrees) × 100
