Blockchain Physics: The Mechanics of Gwei

Learn the principles of EVM Execution Limits, EIP-1559 base fee burning economics, and why deploying a smart contract costs exponentially more than simply sending money.

What is Gas Limits?

Ethereum (and other EVM chains like Polygon or Arbitrum) operates as a massive distributed world-computer. To prevent an amateur developer from accidentally writing an infinite `While` loop that permanently freezes the entire global network, every single mathematical computation (addition, storing data, verifying a signature) costs a specific amount of "Gas".

Think of the Gas Limit as strictly the amount of gallons of fuel your car's physical tank holds. A simple standard money transfer to a friend requires strictly `21,000` units. A massive complex Uniswap trade requires roughly `150,000` units to execute the heavier mathematics.

The EIP-1559 Pricing Algorithm

  • The Base Fee: This is dynamically set by the blockchain depending entirely on how congested the network is that second. If millions of people are trading NFTs, this base price skyrockets. This Ethereum is permanently destroyed (Burned).
  • The Priority Fee (Tip): This goes directly into the Miner/Validator's pocket to heavily incentivize them to include your transaction in the exact next block instead of making you wait.
  • Gwei: 1 Gwei is simply $1 / 1,000,000,000$ (One Billionth) of a single full Ethereum coin.

The Execution Equation

Total ETH Paid = Gas Limit × (Base Fee + Priority Fee Tip)

If you set your Gas Limit to `21,000` (gallons) and the total Gwei Price is `100` (dollars per gallon), you pay exactly 2,100,000 Gwei (which is $0.0021$ ETH).
